Driven by heightening living standards and longer stay-home time due to the pandemic, China’s pet market has seen extraordinary growth in recent years.
China’s Booming Pet Economy
Latest report from iResearch indicates that in 2021, China’s urban pet dog and cat market has reached 249bn yuan, a 20.6% increase over 2020, far exceeding China’s 8.1% GDP growth in 2021.
What’s more, when you enter “pet” in Baidu Maps, you will find over 80,000 pet related business locations across China, including 20,000+ pet hospitals and 60000+ pet shops.
Pet Ownership on the Rise
According to China Pet Industry Association, in 2021 the number of pet parents in China’s urban areas grew by 8.7% to 68.99 million, of which 46% were from the post-90s generation.
The number of urban pets is expanding as well, with pet cats reaching 58.6 million (up by 19.4%) and pet dogs 54.29 million (up by 4%). Due to the fast-paced lifestyle and limited living space in urban areas, cats are a more popular pet option than dogs.
Smart Pet Tech Is Gaining Traction
From 2017 to 2021, China’s smart pet product market has gone up from 980 million yuan to 3.86 billion yuan, exhibiting a 40.9% YoY growth, as reported by LeadLeo Research Institute. This figure is forecast to reach 9.81 billion yuan in 2026.
